Starting Outlook Express Real Slow

Starting Outlook Express Real Slow
« on: April 28, 2002, 06:23:07 PM »
Background:
I am running 5.1.2 set up as server and gatewayon connecting to the internet via ADSL PPPoE. I have outlook express downloading mail from my isp pop account and from the server via a IMAP account.

Here is my problem:
Every since I added the IMAP account pointing to the server, it seems to take 30-40 seconds to start Outlook Express. Sometimes the program even hangs. Once it does get loaded the program seems to work at normal speed getting/sending email.

Other information:
I saw a post stat seemed similar about a person who was having slow connection times with his pop account on 5.1.2. The final post in the tread said to change the /etc/hosts file and add the the ip, machine name, & user name to the file for each user.

I was going to give it a try buy that file (/etc/hosts) specifically says not to change any information in this file and to change the file in the /etc/e-smith/templates directory. No such file exists.

Any one have any information reagrding this?

Thanks for you help.

Sincerely,
Rick Evans

The templates are in /etc/e-smith/template/full/original/path/to/original/template/
In this case it's /etc/e-smith/template/etc/hosts/ and to change it, you better put your changes in /etc/e-smith/template-custom/etc/hosts/ (you'll have to create that directory) so that your changes aren't lost when rebooting/upgrading/whatever.

There is a bug with using DHCP on eth0, causing terribly slow connection times for local services. I don't know whether that applies to your ADSL connection but it might be worthwile to look at it anyway.

Now my question is: how did you get OE to recognize your server as being IMAP? I only get my OE5 to see the server as POP, and I'm not able to change it to IMAP anywhere.

Ooops that should be .../templates/... and .../templates-custom/...

Thanks for the reply:

I am going to give you solution a try shortly.

I response to your question about IMAP question with Oulook Express, he is what I did (not a big deal).

1. Open OE6
2. Select Tools-Accounts...
3. Select Add-Mail...
4. Fill in appropriant info and selcet Next-Next
5. Selecet IMAP from the drop down list in the "E-Mail Server Screen"
6. Incomming and outgoing server are both "mail"
7. Follow the next two screens and click finish.

Thats it, really, not a big deal. After that I think a dialog box will pop up and ask you to subscribe to some folders on the IMAP server. Just select "OK" (not sure if you should subscribe to something or not, I didn't). Thats it.

I have heard of a problem with the IMP (webmail folders) and the Outlook folders not pointing to the same folders on the server. There are some fixes around here to help you out with that, but I haven't got that far yet.

Hope this helps.

Sincerely,
Rick Evans

I simply must have overlooked the drop-down list earlier.  IMAP is working alright now, thanks much!

FWIW I upgraded my SME 5.1.2 to IMP3 earlier, and deleted the default Mail/ folder.  As far as I can tell, I can see all IMAP folders quite alright in OE5.
