You set the SME to use your private, static IP address as its "external" address and the ISP's public IP address as the SME's "gateway" address using the Admin screen, right?

Does it work if you connect a regular PC instead of the SME?

What you are asking is what I suggested, yes?

I was in the middle of a project when I made my suggestions and hope I guided him correctly.

I have set up many a server behing a router, which is essentially what is needed here.  Not sure why it is not working for Free_one.
