upgrading from old install
« on: June 30, 2008, 09:07:55 AM »
Hi guys,
It's time to come clean, I have an SME server 6.0.1 with updates still running, and I want to upgrade it to the latest 7.3
I remember coming across a page talking about upgrading from SME 6.0.1 to 7 (it could have been to 6.5), and it talked about removing rpms, but can't find it atm.
here http://wiki.contribs.org/Updating_to_SME_7.2#Upgrading_from_a_system_prior_to_7.1 it says

If you are upgrading from a system prior to 7.1 you will need to manually install the kmods for smp kernel.
To install the kmods for smp kernel type at command line:
Code: [Select]
yum install kmod*smp*
signal-event post-upgrade
signal-event-reboot
but that doesn't seem to address my concern, what I want to do is make my SME 6.0.1 a vanilla install pretty much by removing all the rpms that I installed, so I can backup, and upgrade, at least that's what the page that I can't find said should be done.
btw my current SME server is behind a firewall, and mainly does internal tasks, upgrading isn’t for a security concern, it's more to do with the current contribs available for SME 7, and sarg is broken on my current install ;P
anyway thanks in advance for any help you can offer :)

All you needed to do was look on the Howto page, linked at the top of these forums

http://wiki.contribs.org/UpgradeDisk
Please search before asking, an answer may already exist.

Hi Mary,
Thanks for the link :) I did look at the howto page that’s where I found the link I put in my first post, but when I saw a topic called UpgradeDisk I didn’t think it had anything to do with what I was after, Could I or someone else rename it? Or at least have a link from http://wiki.contribs.org/Updating_to_SME_7.2 to that page?
Anyway I have a follow up question, I don’t intend to upgrade the PC, in fact the 2X hdd’s in Raid 0 where SME is currently installed is also where I would like the new install to be, how would I go about it then??
I’m currently going through http://forums.contribs.org/index.php?topic=33844.0
Might have to try a VM upgrade first and see how I go (though I’m a VM noob ;) )

Put the sme7.3 CD disk in the drive and select upgrade.

Make sure you follow warnings re custom templates and old contribs as per the Upgrade Disk method.

Also read the very long forum post about upgrading that is referred to in that wiki article.

You would be wise to remove one of the RAID drives and keep that as a backup in case things go wrong.
You can easily revert to sme 6.x with a degraded RAID array.

You would obviously upgrade the other one disk, also in degraded RAID mode.
