VPN to sme 5.1.2 is great but....
« on: May 02, 2002, 12:42:05 AM »
I cannot see anything on the internal Windows Domain.  I thought this was related to the subnet mask of the VPN connection but found an article that said PPTP doesn't pass subnet mask and that it should not matter when attempting to browse network resources over a PPTP connection.

IP props on PPTP connection at client

ip 192.168.0.250
subnet mask 255.255.255.255
gateway 192.168.0.250

IP info on Internal Windows Network

192.168.0.X to 192.168.0.xxx = DHCP pool for Windows
Gateway is 192.168.0.1 (internal nic on sme server in server / gateway mode)
Internal subnet mask assigned to clients is 255.255.255.0

How did I set it up?
While on the internal domain, I fully configured a desktop with machine account etc.  Performed successful login to domain.

From separate location (same computer) on broadband connection set up PPTP connection to use my ID and Password on the SME box.  It works great and I can't see anything in the domain.  The SME box is server / gateway, not acting as a Windows DC.  The sme server workgroup is the same as the Windows domain.  On the internal network I can browse for and access the sme server on the network.

How can I get a Windows Domain login dialog over PPTP?  If I can't, can I run a script at the client to map drives if their sme ID / Password is the same as domain ID and PW?

Thanks in advance.

Are you using the SME as a DHCP server for the LAN, or do you have a separate PDC on the LAN doing that? Or no DHCP at all?

One of my DC's is handling dhcp.

Any thoughts would be appreciated

I have a similar setup here. NT4 PDC behind the SME server/gateway/PPTP. Run the admin config, and enable and setup the DHCP server on the SME to match what your other DHCP server would give a client. Then run it again, and disable DHCP on the SME. That worked for me. Even if you're not using the SME's DHCP, PPTP still pulls the info from there.

The problem might be because the machine using the pptp connection is not using the correct WINS server.  In w2k, perform a winipcfg /all and for the PPTP link, there is no WINS server.  In w2k, when setting up a pptp connection, go to the properties and set the address of the remote wins server.
