I'm confused....
« on: August 23, 2008, 11:53:37 AM »
Does SME server Store users MAIL or does it only provide a PROXY

I have several sites with Windows 2000 + Exchange and Novell Groupwise

Mostly 5, 10 or 25 users - which I need to upgrade

I thought this would be a good opertunity to look beyond Microsoft as
cost is a big factor. Novell dosn't have a decent Small Business Server anymore (Pitty!)

Sorry...

Stored on the Server??
rather than Outlook PST files on PC!

Is there a way to ARCHIVE the mail - would be nice if ALL incoming and outgoing mail can be archived

Groupwise has some nice feature - archving is pretty good compared to Outlook

It's stored on the server. The mail can be reached by POP3/IMAP... all in the wiki to read about it.
It's NOT the same way exchange deals with the mail but still very efficient.

Archiving is referred to as BCC in the discussions. Stores all e-mail into 1 mailacocunt for legal reasons.

Or you could simply run a backup which should also archive your e-mail.

If you use Outlook configured to use POP, then Outlook will store messages in PST files on PC.

If you are sensible, you will use IMAP, and the messages will be stored on the server.

Consider using Thunderbird or some other competent IMAP client, rather than Outlook (which is probably spreads more viruses the any other program).

You can set outlook to leave messages on the server even when using POP to retrieve your mail. This will have the mail stored both in the PST file and on the server.

>The message will stay on the server until the User/Email client directs to to be deleted. With Outlook POP the default is to delete it as soon as it has been downloaded.

But I don't see any reason for doing that when you can use IMAP.

For mobile users it works great. They can get there mail while in the office. On the road where they may not have an internet connection they can reference whatever they need. The mail is still backed up on the server. I realize that with thunderbird you can set an IMAP account to download the mail locally also so the above is also true with that setup.

Most, if not any decent, mail client can be configured to sync mail to the computer for offline use, just have a look in the manual of the mail client you are using.

"because it is the way we have always done it............."

Which is not a good reason and one that should never be used by a person responsible for computer maintenance

I see the reason to use POP if a user(s) has nearly 10GB of emails (and no they don't like deleting no matter how many times you tell them )
