DNS not resolving internal network hostnames on sme server
« on: September 12, 2008, 11:32:11 PM »
I have 7.3 (I am installing all updates now), in standalone mode, dhcp enabled, no isp dns entry made during setup.

sme.mydomain.corp is internal domain (and sme server name).
  desktop.mydomain.corp - dhcp
  laptop.mydomain.corp - dhcp

They can both resolve sme and sme.mydomain.corp, and they do resolve each other (with or without suffix) after a few minutes (which makes me thing it is some kind of windows netbios voodoo involved in their seeing each other).

I checked, both have the ip of the sme server as the dns and wins server. Nslookup (on workstations and server) sees the main server, it resolves with no errors to the sme server and domain (with and without suffix, non-authoritative answer but no errors)

However, the sme server, from the console, will not resolve either host. I would like to avoid having to put in another device to do dhcp and dns, I also don't want all static IPs (in fact, that is not an option since I have a couple road warriors).

I really need some help on this, I can see this being a big impediment for me on a few upcoming projects. For instance, how can I let a user vpn in (actually, I am using Bitvise tunnelier for this through ssh... it is awesome) and rdp to their desktop when they have to know the ip address of their workstation? That is only working in the interim.

On a bright note, this will be the third SME server I have deployed, replacing as many SBS servers. Woot!

Oh lord... I am an idiot   ... and I don't read the manual ... I am going to stand in the corner now.

You can add static entries in hostnames and addresses. Jeez... if only I thought to look there before making a pleading call to the braintrust.

I hope others that look for this issue benefit from this   :o

I LOVE SME!!!  :pint:

Don't feel too bad - as has been frequently discussed, it would be nice if tinydns updated itself with the netbios name of a system after dhcpd assigns an IP - instead of calling all dynamic systems "pc000x"...
