Trouble with netatalk

Trouble with netatalk
« on: May 07, 2002, 05:40:02 AM »
Greetings

I have a 5.1.2 server set up in a mixed PC and Macintosh environment.  Everything works great, except for this:

The lone Mac running OS 7.5.1 can read and write files to/from an i-bay without any problems.

The other Macs running OS 9.0.0 can read the files, and sometimes write them.  Copying or writing some files gives a Mac error -50, which is some kind of file system parameter error as far as I can tell.  Some files write perfectly fine, others never do.  It's never a case of sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't.  The exact same files write to the i-bay perfectly under OS 7.5.1, so it has to be a problem with some setting either in netatalk or under Mac OS.  I can't upgrade the machine to a newer version of Mac OS, and I can't downgrade it either because I need OS 9 to run Toast (CD authoring software).

Oh, and the 2 Macs are physically identical except the one that works has 72MB of RAM and the one that doesn't has 136MB.  And both can read/write with no problems from a Windows 2000 Apple share.

Any help is much appreciated!

Jeff

anyone?  If I can't fix this problem I'll have to abandon e-smith and struggle through setting up a general distribution like Debian...

I am having the same problem with a twist.  I have all Mac )S 8.6.  All can use the E-smith box without any problem---until I attempt to use Quark Express 4 & 4.1.  Then I get error -50, -48, and a bunch of others.
All other apps work fine.  Anyone else run into this?  Is it a weird file locking problem?  Jeff, maybe we could replace all our machine's Open Transport with the 7.5 version :)

Hi guys, I' m having the same problem as you. I get access to my linux server from the mac box, I am able to write, edit, create, delete any files, with the exeption of executables (not sure if that's the right terminology on the mac world) that I get the -50 error as both of you have been getting. I also get that same error after I copy a .tiff file to the server from the mac. If I then, move the same file to a different mac box, it works just fine (I thought the file might have been corrupted, but that was not the case obviously, since I opened from a different mac box). Anyway, I have been looking for answers for this issue everywhere, google, usergroups and this site, but no luck whatsoever.... Please somebody help us; since e-smith claims that its netatalk setup is supposed to work. Thank you for any reply we might get. Have a good day,

Dan

You know, this doesn't look really good for esmith, since the OS has all these bugs and there is no one to answer the questions. I';ve got it up and running but I can't save executables still. I took it to the customer and they said it was fine with them. But today I got an email saying that the eserver is locking the files once again! The customer tells me "the user has experienced a file lock problem". Is there a fix for that ! or, better yet, are there any issues with having folders with their name being 22 characters long? Please, anyone on this site, help us !

Dan

PS It has been more than a month we started this post and no answers...

I believe you can pay e-smith for support. I really don't think you can complain about a free OS not giving you the support you need.
