Urgent Help Request
« on: September 22, 2008, 03:32:45 PM »
Hi All,  I am in a Proper fix and would love to hear from anybody in the know.

I have lost connection  to the shared i-bays (is that right) on my server computer.  The workstations are reporting 'The server is not configured for transactions'.

The setup is one server with the SME server software and 4 workstations (windows 2000 and XP) all connected via a router with DHCP enabled.  The server functionality is about as basic as possible, just providing a domain and two disks for data sharing.  The whole system has been working fine until this morning (see below).

My workstations cannot connect to the drives on the server and i cannot view them by typing //server1/primary/shared etc.

If i try to add a network place i can see the Entire Network and the Microsoft Windows Networks and then the domain name But the path stops there and the drives are not appearing on the network browser.

From any workstation i can ping the server on 192.168.1.200 and i can ping the other workstations.  I can also access the internet and the LAN is working for every workstation.

The problem started this morning.  Somebody asked me to allow VPN on the server.  I allowed VPN on their username in users, i set PPTP to 1 in remote access.  I then thought i would test to see if it would work for me and enabled the VPN for my account and set up a VPN network connection from my desktop.  Once i had verified that the connection was possible I disabled the VNP on my user account and deleted the connection in windows.

As soon as i did this i couldn't access the shared drives on the server anymore and this problem spread to all the other workstations as soon as they were rebooted or logged off and on again.  I now have the VPN set off for all users and the PPTP back to 0.  as far as i am aware everything is back how it was and i have rebooted my server and my router.

Please please help, we are unable to do any work and are sitting here doing nothing.

Thanks,

Magnus

I'm hardly an expert on these matters, but the first thing I'd do is run a reconfigure on the server. From the Server Manager, select 'Reboot or Shutdown', 'Reconfigure' then 'Perform'. This'll regenerate the Samba conf files, etc, and might help.

Hi Guys, I have been reading some topics on the forum and there is some serious knowledge out there - most of the time i can't even understand the questions let alone the answers.

I guss my problem is really a first day lesson one type of thing - so if you have any idea at all i would really like to hear from you.

Please!

You can try to reach the server via its IP \\192.168.1.200\primary\shared to check samba status.

Hi,

If i use \\192.168.1.200\primary\shared I get a windows message box saying check the spelling.  If i reverse the slashes i get 'This website is under construction' for //192.168.1.200 and a 'Website cannot be found' message for any of the deeper paths.

Does this show anything do you think.

Thanks,

You can reach your primary ibays only if you are logged in as admin, if you are logged in as user you can reach only some ibays. You can try to reach the server typing \\192.168.1.200\.

Check your Information Bays (i-bays) User access permissions.

Hi,  It was more problematic that that i think.  But as you mention it - i have reinstalled the entire network over night (and lost all my old data on the whole server) and now cannot access the ibay from the workstations.

I have the main disk which holds the OS and want to access the rest of the drive over the network.  I can set up a share on the network from windows but cannot copy any files into it.

I have created the /Shared folder in the drive as this is what i had before (as well as files, cgi-bin and html) and i though this might help, but pointing windows at the Shared folder makes no difference.

How do i set permissions for primary and which should i use?  Thanks.

You don't, they are set by default for primary.

Do this
Start
Run
type in exactly
\\192.168.1.200
press Enter

Should give you a listing of shares available on the server, assuming samba & wins are running correctly

If trying to access the primary ibay using a web browser (on the local network) then do
http://192.168.1.200
which should open the default index file in the primary ibay (which usually says "This website is under construction" on a new unconfigured system).

Report back your results

You might also take a look in the messages log file to see if any obvious errors are being logged
Server manager
View log files
select messages
OK

Hi Mary,  That's what i thought (about not allocating permissions to primary) but i can't put files in the directory i have created called shared as access is denied.

I have done the exercise that you said and it works - i have a directory called primary and one called magnus which is my shared area.

I can copy files etc to magnus but not to primary or its subdirectories.  I want to share primary for everybody to use.

Thanks for your help.  Any ideas?

Magnus

If you are going to ask questions in the forums please read all the answers that people give and DON'T skip over parts of the answer. You missed this from post #6.
"You can reach your primary ibays only if you are logged in as admin, if you are logged in as user you can reach only some ibays."

I would also suggest (to many people's dislike), but I suggest it here as you seem to be lacking knowledge about the basics, please read the manuals. Primary ibay access is only allowed to admin (for Windows file sharing access that is).

I suggest you create an ibay called shared, and let people use that, it should work essentially the same as ...primary/shared would. Enable appropriate group/user access for that ibay.
