SMTP port list for router port forwarding?
« on: September 29, 2008, 11:53:34 AM »
Hi,
Recently I have changed a client's router which is on the external side of the SME 7.3 server.
Although users can access the Internet then xould not receive mail.

I checked the settings on the old router and made sure that the new one was set up the same but still got the mail problem.

I checked woth the router manufactirer's hot-line and then asked me what ports the server was using.
As I am using standard SMTP for mail retrieval, I suggested that we were using port 25.

I set up a rule to allow port 25 in for start and end port on the server's external IP address but this still didn't work.
The Hot-line advised me to delete the rule and set the default server address on the router to be that of the SME server. This I did and all worked fine.

The Hot line then suggested that the mail server was using additional ports, (other than 25), and asked me to check this out. Then, when we have a port list, I can re-insert the correct rules to allow SMTP access into the SME server via the new router.

Can anybody tell me what the are port numbers that are used?

Many thanks
Alex

Maybe Secure SMTP Port 465 and Secure IMAP 993...

TCP 25  (smtp)
TCP 143 (imap)
TCP 110 (pop3 access external)
TCP 465 (ssmtp)
TCP 993 (imaps)
TCP 995 (pop3s)
