Domain Login from Win XP Pro
« on: October 07, 2008, 04:08:39 PM »
We use roaming profiles and have had all W2K Pro desktops until now. I just configured a Win XP Pro desktop. The new desktop has been added to the domain and I can manually map shared drives. Trying to login as a user results in "Windows cannot connect to the domain, either because the domain controller is down or otherwise unavailable, or because your computer account was not found...".

I can see the computer name in the accounts file, group file, and passwd file, and the same user can map a shared drive manually. Does anyone know if I'm dealing with an SME issue or a Windows XP issue?

That article pointed me in the right direction. It was a Windows XP Pro issue.

I had to disable three settings:
Start-->Control Panel-->Administrative Tools-->Local Security Policy-->Local Policies-->Security Options:
Domain member: Digitally encrypt or sign secure channel data (always)
Domain member: Digitally encrypt secure channel data (when possible)
Domain member: Digitally sign secure channel data (when possible)

Thanks,
Jim

Apply the registry mod located on your sme box here /home/e-smith/files/server-resources/regedit/ to your winxp client machine.  I believe you can also point your browser to http://your_sme_box/server-resources on the internal LAN.

This is a known issue with WinXP and domain logons.
