Undelete a folder ?
« on: October 08, 2008, 06:21:39 PM »
Hi
I was logged into the local network from a linux machine;and accidentally created a link to a folder in an ibay, and also may have duplicated a folder by accident.
I deleted the duplicate and the symlink, but then the remaining folder was not accessible, and when I logged out then back in again from a local machine that folder was not also gone
But it's not in my trash box on the local machine or anything.
Is there anyway to get this folder back? Is it still on the server someplace or is it gone forever ?

Please advise
Thanks

Unless it was within an ibay and you enabled the RecycleBin feature the answer is no, unfortunately not.

It was in an ibay, and I may have enabled the RecycleBin how do I know ? or where would this have been enabled. It's been a while since I've done much of anything to this server it just keeps running

Please advise ?
Thanks

  • Use one of the backup contribs in future
  • Make sure shadow copy is ON
  • Make sure the recycle bin is enabled

Well, you have this purple button below your name so I guess you know how to use the wiki?  ;)
Have a look here.

No this is helpful I do realize that some solutions to this should have, or could have been active to avoid any folders getting accidentally deleted etc.
I do know I have regular weekly backup via dar2 to external backup I've set that up quite a while ago.
But I'm only doing weekly backups and did not consider accidentally deleting a file, since normally the file would go to my local trash/recycling bin; and I could always just restore it. But it would appear that when in an ibay this does not happen.
It would appear to just get deleted. I was not aware of that topic nor had any reason to consider this topic since a normal delete of a file would go to the recycling bin. I did not realize at all that it would act differently with shared files or SME ibay files.

Thanks for the response, I would like to enable the recycling bin feature at least. Since I have backup with dar2 etc. that should be good enough.

I just was curious if there was an internal recycle bin that I was not aware of that I might be able to recover the folder that I accidentally deleted.
I think the previous poster sort of hit the nail on the head if I don't have ShadowCopy enabled or recyclebin enabled then I'm out of luck.

But how can I tell if my recyclebin feature is  enabled in SME. I'm not sure if I enabled this or not, as I've said this server had been running with very little maint. required so I've forgot if I have enabled this or not.

I don't think this adequately answers the question.

Shadow Copy appears to cater to more of the IE crowed as indicated in the link you posted; and I don't have any IE on my computers. All my local computers are Linux based.

So from these Contribs & Howtos and FAQ from start to finish is a pretty large text to read in one sitting. I must say that I don't really need to do that if someone happened to have a quick and short answer for this.
If you don't want to lend a hand then I would appreciate just simply not posting to my questions.There is no need for this kind of rudeness. And I believe I've already told you this before.

If you don't have a helpful answer other then to say read all the forums and read all the FAQ's and all the HowTo's from start to finish,then please please do not answer my question.

Yep, so gone forever is my answer unless I turned on the RecycleBin and forgot about it.

When these instruction note ibayname I'm assuming they mean my ibay name and not just to type in the word ibayname ?

Anyhow assuming this is correct, I'm not getting a recycle folder even after deleting some files etc. I don't know why

Thanks

Some people are downright lazy as well as being obnoxious. I say please and I get told to stop being rude ??? Go jump !!!

Are you really that lazy to work out for yourself how to interrogate your server databases to tell you a simple thing like is the recycle bin enabled ???
I cannot accept or believe that if you can install sme and maintain sme servers, then you are not capable of working out a simple thing like is recycle bin set ?

From the link provided earlier
http://wiki.contribs.org/RecycleBin

were these commands

db accounts setprop ibayname RecycleBin enabled
db accounts setprop ibayname KeepVersions enabled
signal-event ibay-modify ibayname

As they are db commands then it's simple to get the syntax (as listed in one of the Howtos if you had bothered to read it as suggested) using

db

That then leads to this easy command, which will show if the recycle bin is enabled or not

db accounts show ibayname
eg

db accounts show p

p=ibay
    CgiBin=disabled
    Gid=5017
    Group=staff
    Name=P drive
    PasswordSet=yes
    PublicAccess=none
    ShadowCopy=disabled
    Uid=5017
    UserAccess=wr-group-rd-group

Hey the wiki link even tells you the location of the recycle bin, but you are obviously too lazy to read the article and too lazy to look at your server.

After making changes to the ibay you need to logoff your workstation and log back in again so those new access permissions are included in your login session.

rude mary

Please change your name to rude Mary, thanks for your continuing display of rudeness

I am aware of my own hard work ethics and reasons for posting as I see fit and need not justify myself to you.
However I may actually take you up on your suggestion of renaming my self Lazy86 thats pretty good.Seriously,however your answers will no doubt be the same rude answers such as: Please read everything, obtain all that is obtainable, from start to finish then you will know all things;and thus no need for a forum at all. Now who is lazy ?

If you don't like my questions as I've stated before please don't respond.

And even if you believe it's lazy, so what ?
Since it is your opinion that I"m lazy, then why bother making these comments about reading anything to begin with. Why not just provide the simple answer and leave it at that or just leave no response at all?
But no you have to try to force someone into submission. Listen close (NO I will not do as you ask) I will do as I want GOT IT.
I'll be sure to start each of my post with please help the lazy man with some answers perhaps I'll get simpler answers from you that way too so not to confuse things.

What part of don't respond do you not understand ?

Thanks rude mary
This will be my last response regarding this subject,

Thanks to all for the help.

http://ardictionary.com/Please/7489
Definition of Please: used in polite request; "please pay attention"

You have a bad attitude problem and a very poor understanding of english grammar.

I asked you politely & pleasantly to "please" read certain information as the exact answers you wanted were in fact there.
To perceive a "please" as being rude is quite puzzling.

For someone seeking help and advice you need to be more open minded about what you receive, rather than criticise the advice & the giver, because it 's not exactly what you wanted. If you followed the advice you would find the answer.

It's the last you'll hear from me too !

Agent86, a member of the Documentation team who has been a regular on this forum since 2004 has no excuse for not knowing how to interrogate the configuration databases.

Mary has obviously studied well the system, its operation and its documentation, and regularly gives thoroughly researched, accurate and clear answers here.

Please show some respect.
