VMWare Server v2 on SME7.3
« on: October 14, 2008, 08:38:00 PM »
I've upgraded my VMware server running on SME 7.3 from version 1.0.7 to version 2.
During configuration I had to temporarily stop xinetd to be able to select port 902.
Everything works fine. I didn't have to remove installed smeserver-vmware-server contrib.
VMware Server v2 comes with automatically installed web management interface and include web based remote console (installed as a browser add-on). No more separate VMware server console (unfortunately), but VMWare infrastructure client works with this server instead.
Running happily on DELL PowerEdge SC440 with 2.0GHz dualcore CPU and 4GB or RAM.

Boris.

It is probably not good form to ask why you want to run VMWare server on your SME server, but I will ask anyway:  Why!?

I can understand wanting to put SME server in a VM, but not the other way around.  Perhaps you could enlighten me as to why you would want to do it this way?

I run my SME server inside of a VM hosted on a sparse CentOS 5.2 installation.  Other machines run in this host as well and it is quite efficient.

But as to VMWare Server v2, I don't like VMWare server 2... the UI doesn't let me use a VMWare server console and what is provided only works well with Windows or 32bit Linux... I run most of my Linux desktops in 64 bit and because their web client is Java based, they have effectively excluded all 64bit Linux users.

My SME server is a dedicated machine for filesharing, multidomain web serving and e-mail. Its always on with UPS and scheduled automated backup.
Rest of the workstations are windows computers that are on and off as needed. Running VMware server on top of SME allows me to have a remote workstation that is always available regardless of state or availability of workstations. This is my preferred way of using SME at home and for many small business client's offices.
I regularly install SME inside of VMWare as well (mostly on VMWare workstations) for testing, but for "production" environment dedicated server that is not depending on hosting workstation is more reliable.

Web console works for me.
