PPTP XP -> SME IBAY: FAST, SLOW, STOP!
« on: October 19, 2008, 11:46:29 PM »
Has anyone else noticed that whilst the connection session goes through quite quickly, actually browsing the samba shares is quite slow and sometimes seems to go 'stale' [torches wafting or hour glasses] - when I look at my router lights there's loads of activity but not much data seems to be making it? Eventually the sessions goes like mud.
Disconnecting and re-establishing the connection works but its not long for a repeat of above.

Tested this on various XP clients [ADSL UK] and it seems the same.

What could be causing this?

How is your SME connected to the internet? I have one at home with an ADSL connection and therefore the upload is quite low. That's causing the browsing of samba shares over VPN to be very slow indeed. If you browse the samba shares through the windows explorer there is much data being transferred AFAIK. Try the dir command on a command line that should be faster.
That would then mean that it's not SME's fault but Microsoft's ;)

Yes, both the XP and SME connected via ADSL so ratio is 2mb ul / 256 k dl - I realise that's not great however the point I am trying to make is that initially it starts off OK as in 'usable' albeit not the fastest. But as described then slows to a crawl.

I'm not trying to portion blame on M$ or SME just thinking outloud and wondering if anyone has seen this and what the root cause is?
