losing net connection

G'day,

I'm running SME 5.1.2 which had been stable for some time but now I am experiencing a lot of disconnections from my cable internet service (OPTUS).

This can be fixed by rebooting the server but I am also noticing that during bootup, httpd-e-smith fails to start.

I am in the very early stages of trying to diagnose the problem but I would like to ask if there are any diagnostics, such as entries into the logs, that might help me or could provide the further info this forum would require?

Thanks all,
Andrew.

Check /var/log/messages and /var/log/httpd/error_log as a starting point.

Thanks Des,

The httpd failing to start appears to be a bit hit and miss.  Although it has failed to start a couple of times, it starts OK more often than not.

I had a look at the logs but they don't make much sense to me.  The only entry I found that seemed to point to a problem was one in the httpd_error log which reported:

[Sat May 11 16:32:15 2002] [crit] (98)Address already in use: make_sock: could not bind to address x.x.x.x port 443

I have not given the IP address as this is a public forum and the address is mine - I'm sure you understand.

I'd love to hear any further thoughts.

Cheers,
Andrew.
