Which won't help those who install the Joomla contrib because this contrib installs Joomla in the /opt/ directory tree and adds httpd configuration to point to this location.   Upgrading Joomla in this case requires the user to have knowledge of the contrib and some advanced knowledge of SME.

Personally, I prefer to install webapps like Joomla directly into an ibay so that it is very easy for me to upgrade at a later time and I'm not tied to a contrib.  I can continue to upgrade this webapp using the upgrade instruction provided by the webapp developer (i.e., six months after I install this app, I don't need to try to remember what I did to install it in the first place.  I simply follow the webapp developers instructions).  Some here will advice against this approach, stating that installing a webapp like joomla directly into an ibay presents a security risk.  In my case, this security risk is VERY small and one that can be easily mitigated.

Do u mean I have to install "smeserver-joomla-1.5.1-2.noarch.rpm" then upgrade it to 1.5.7 by following the instructions here http://wiki.contribs.org/Talk:Joomla posted by mmccarn?

I'm reading the instructions right now in how to install an i-bay coz I haven't done that yet.... So like whats the process with this if I install it in an i-bay?

1. Create an ibay for your webapp.

2. Install phpmyadmin contrib to admin mysql.  http://wiki.contribs.org/PHPMyAdmin

3. Create a mysql dbase for you webapp.

4. Copy your webapp tarball to the ibay html dir and untar it.

5. Follow the webapp install instructions.

How do I do step number 4? I created an ibay and named it joomla2. I already have phpmyadmin installed so I just created a db named doomla. I just dnt know how to do step 4. Do I have to go to the server-console to do that?

I was successful in installing joomla in an i-bay, also changed the permission of the configuration.php for the initial installation and changed back its permission to 640. And every time  I logon to the users page of the joomla site, I get a whitescreen page...

So I ges, installing joomla in an i-bay didnt solve my main problem. T_T

My understanding is that the Joomla application files can be upgraded no matter where Joomla is installed.
Untarring the joomla.tar.gz file to opt or to an ibay should make no difference.
Yes the original sme contrib will have configured httpd etc using templates or custom templates, but those will still remain in effect if upgrading a Joomla install that is using /opt.

The upgrade instructions are reasonably explicit on the Joomla site, and should be able to be followed by most people who are capable of installing and configuring a sme server.

I don't think it matters whether the app is installed to /opt or to an ibay.

I assume you have already installed Joomla using the Contrib in the Wiki or by some other means eg using a tar.gz file from the Joomla site.
It doesn't really matter which way you already have Joomla installed, as you can do a generic upgrade over any version by using the (appropriate version specific) update files available from the Joomla site at
http://www.joomla.org/
"over the top of" means exactly that, install the files to the exact same location as your original Joomla installation, and the existing (older) files will be overwritten by the newer (upgrade) files.
There are specific steps to follow which are documented at http://www.joomla.org/
particularly http://docs.joomla.org/Upgrading_1.5_from_an_existing_1.5x_version
The important thing is to copy configuration.php to somewhere safe before doing the upgrade and then copy it back after the upgrade is finished.

Well that's the general idea. I have not personally used or followed those particular instructions but they look adequate.

You ask people for answers (in a previous thread if I recall correctly), but choose not to absorb the advice given.

Your blank page issues are probably to do with apache php settings or file permission/ownership issues as perviously advised.

You continue to blunder on thinking that if you try and install to somewhere else your problem will be magically solved. Sorry that's not likely.

I suggested you could work this out by simply installing the Joomla contrib referred to in the wiki and report back your results. The contrib should set up all the required settings etc, so it should work first time. Please do not change anything except basic domain related settings, in particular do not change file permissions or ownership as you have probably been doing the wrong thing so far.
Get that sorted out first and then worry about upgrading.
It should take all of 5 minutes to install and another 5 minutes to do basic configuration for your domain..

Please uninstall and remove all previously installed versions of Joomla and any custom templates etc you may have created, before installing the contrib.

You need to be willing to take advice if you want to resolve your problem.

This is what I'm trying to do right now... Following your advice by installing the joomla contrib.... That's why I'm askin where I could download the RPM that installs joomla 1.5.7......

yeah, I've gone way overboard... I was ignoring the instructions of installing the old joomla and was trying to do it with the latest version of joomla... Geez.... My bad....

If you enable ssh access on remote servers (preferably via PP key access and not password) then you can setup anything remotely using putty.exe
In ten minutes time you would know if successful.

Unfortunately we cant do that anymore, we've been suffering major power outage for months... been running for 2 months now... We lost a working system coz of this... No one's on watch during night time, so now we decided that we'd turn off the servers after 6pm.
