Changes to e-smith-backup?
« on: November 03, 2008, 01:55:24 PM »
Hi,

Noticed a few changes with e-smith-backup from smeupdates-testing afer loading e-smith-backup-2.0.0-17.el4. These don't appear to be documented in the changelog and I'm wondering if they are a side effect of some other tweaks mentioned or intentional.

1) If a file changes whilst being backed up it no longer causes DAR to fail with error 11. There was some work done on working around some of the side effects of this in bug 4395. <http://bugs.contribs.org/show_bug.cgi?id=4395> but none of that appears to have addressed the base issue that now appears to be resolved according to the contents of the Daily Backup Report email I got:

Backup of mysql databases has been done.
Mounting backup shared directory 192.168.1.250/Backup Drive
Backup temp directory /mnt/smb/tmp_dir/xxx.xxx.co.uk is mounted and is writable
Using set number 2 of 3
full backup
Backup base file name is inc-002-20081029
Making backup on temporary dir...
using a backup session timeout of : 28770 seconds
WARNING! File modified while reading it for backup: /home/e-smith/files/users/sue/home/Second Copy/Local Settings/Application Data/Identities/{xxx}/Microsoft/Outlook Express/Inbox.dbx
WARNING! File modified while reading it for backup: /usr/local/share/wx200/20081029.bin
<snip cron section>
Moving backup files to target directory /mnt/smb/xxx.xxx.co.uk/set2
Updating backup configuration data
Backup successfully terminated at : Wed Oct 29 09:13:31 2008

2) A fullback up has just completed in 2h55m, before it would take more like 5 or 6 hours. Again the mail message says succes and looking at the target directory it has about the right number of .dar files in it dated/timed as one would expect. Again why the sudden increase in backup speed? I've not tweaked anything other than going from SMBFS to CIFS as SMBFS has been removed.

Cheers
Dave.

That's because we have switched from bzip to gzip which enables a backup to complete quicker.

That's some improvement in speed, I was happy before but now it's much better. Does the change to gzip also explain the lack of DAR Error 11 and aborted backup? That is even more of a bonus, many thanks to the devs.

No that's to do with the inclusion of a newer version of dar installed.  8)
