email virtual domains
« on: November 05, 2008, 09:11:21 AM »
I have set up several virtual domains, and created some sample user names.
I can not get mail in or out .
the mx record is set and if I try to ping the mail.mydomain.com , I do get the ip of my server.
the configuration of email is set as:
POP3 server access  Allow private
IMAP server access  Allow private
Webmail access  Allow HTTPS (secure)
should these be changed to public ,, ?
the server is new install with all default settings.

Only if you need to access these services from outside your LAN.  Email send/receive will be exactly the same for SME itself, regardless of these settings.  These settings only designate where users can access email.

my test user account is : jftsales

in outlook ,, I have the following:
username jftsales
email address : jftsales@jetfantech.com
incoming mail server: jetfantech.com
outgoing mail server(SMTP): smtp.jetfantech.com

in outgoing server dialog:
my outgoing server (SMTP requires authentication ) is checked,
and logon using ( is checked )
and require secure password authentication (SPA) is checked.

does this have to do with a vaild SSL certificate, as I have the sme server default, without any more modifications for the SSL.

Your email client settings are wrong.
Try

incoming mail server: mail.intelmeas.local
outgoing mail server(SMTP): mail.intelmeas.local

in outgoing server dialog:
my outgoing server (SMTP requires authentication ) UNCHECK
and logon using    UNCHECK
and require secure password authentication (SPA) UNCHECK

You would only user the authentication settings if you have applied the patches that enable that in sme server, see Email FAQ.
Please search before asking, an answer may already exist.

Mary,
thanks for the reply, here is the situation ,
I am having intelmeas.com emails handled by my ISP, so the mx record is set to their server.
for the rest of my virtual domains , I have the mx record pointing to my server in the office.

I tried your suggestion , but that did not work , it says that it can not find the email server.

Make sure you are using port 993 for IMAP access and SSL is enabled.  Also, try pinging your mail server at your workstation command prompt.

port 993 for IMAP access , I did not have this service on my firewall added, so I am going to add it , but I have 2 choices IMAP3 or IMAP4 ?

on  SSL where do you mean to enable , on outlook dialog or the sme server.
if you mean on the sme server, please let me know a good place to start.
thanks.

Unless you have a firewall that allows you to restrict outgoing port number, and you have enabled this setting, you won't need to open any ports.  SInce the port is coming from the LAN, a typical NAT firewall will open the port to the requesting IP automatically.

You need to enable SSL on your email client.  SME requires SSL access, you need to make sure your client is using ssl.  I don't use Outlook, so I can't tell you the exact setting.
