Slow Samba Share
« on: November 18, 2008, 10:27:30 PM »
The SME server in question was just upgrade to version 7.3 and before the upgrade the files they were using would open and save within seconds. Now saving an excel file to an SME server share can take up to 20 - 30 seconds.

The SME server is configured as a domain controller and the clients are all windows XP with a 100 MB network. Everything is working - it just slower than before and I was wondering if there was any setting that could be used to tweak samba a little. Unfortunately I do not know much about the SME server. I can post the SMB.conf file if you think it would help.

Thanks

Wil

Are you sure that this delay is caused by the SME server? I recently have had a similar issue with MS-Excel and MS-Word files. It was caused by the virus scan engine of the virus scanner on the XP computers. The scan engine became buggy after an update.

Is there anything suspicious in the log files on the server?

Thanks for the suggestions.

We tried to access the samba share with the Anti-virus disabled and no change and the slowness is found on all machines not just one.

I have used top to find any issues with memory or CPU usage and everything looks clear. I have reviewd the samba logs and cannot find any errors.

Please let me know if there is anything else I can check.

Hello Again:

The slowness just mysteriously dissappeared. It looks like it could be a Networking issue outside of the Server.

Thanks again for your suggestions.

I have had a similar problem in the past, sme server as the domain controller for xp clients. PC's fine to the log in screen but very slow to log into the desktop and really slow access to smb shares, turned out to be an iffy cheap switch, just something to keep an eye on

If you launched a bug report please mention this there as well. TIA.
