using sme 7 box as gateway, cant access site from domain name
« on: November 20, 2008, 04:51:52 PM »

First of all thanks for being patient with me guys. I am learning allot with my SME 7 experiment.

I have a ATT high-speed connection.

I have a Custom domain name via Dyndns.com

My domain name is www.wrbit.com.

Problem. I am not able to access wrbit.com from the internet. I can ping wrbit.com, but I am not able to access my website from internet explorer localy, or from an external location. I realize that I might be missing information for you guys to help diagnose my problem so feel free to ask.

What could be the problem?

Network configuration (internet)---> (sme 7box/gateway)----> (wireless router)--->(workstation)

I have ports 80, and 443 open also.. Thanks in advance..

Where do you have the site loaded on the server? Is it in the Primary Ibay?

What happens on the local network when you type the server's LAN ip address into a browser?

What are your settings on this http://wiki.contribs.org/SME_Server:Documentation:Administration_Manual:Chapter13#Domains page?

This should not be necessary if SME is the gateway and there are no routers between SME and the internet.

So are you saying since the server is set to be a gateway there is no need to open ports?

Localy when i type in the servers IP: 192.168.63.1, i can view the site. Not externaly though..

when I ping www.wrbit.com, I get a return from 76.249.224.163. This should be your servers current Internet IP address.

If it is not, you have a problem with your Dyndns settings (Dydns is not updating the DNS to point to the correct IP address).

What did you set your port destination IP addess as? If you forwarded the port to another internal IP address, it will not work as it is no longer going to the server.

I think that's the problem. I forwarded port 80 to the servers internal IP. I guess I just need to open the port instead of forwarding it back to its internal ip.

If that's the case how to I allow traffic through port 80 without forwarding it?

You shouldn't need to mess with the port forwarding panel as the server sets it up for you when you set up the domain name in the domains panel.

Pull all the port forward and port open entries out and see if it works.

Ok, i removed the port forwarding.

I updated the dyndns.

Now i can access my website. Yay!! But wait..??

Now i can see my website, but cant access wrbit.com/server-manager. I am able to log into wrbit.com/webmail..

When i attempt to access server manager "wrbit.com/server-manager" i get the login pop up instead of being able to log into the server manager page directly. It will not let me log in as admin, getting invalid user name/password when i know for sure its correct.

What is the deal now?

The server manager is disabled for remote users by default. Have you entered your remote IP address as per the manual?

As davidiwharper says, you should only be able to access server manager from inside your network. If you need remote access you need to set up a VPN. You could add you single remote IP address to local networks but be very, very cautious as a wrong entry here can open you up to all sorts of unpleasant surprises.
