Yes I know maybe I should set up my SME as a Server and Gateway to solve my problem, but is it possible to let my SME update the recordings at DynDNS.org when the server i behind a firewall (SMC Barricade) at the localnet. Today I use a clientprogram on a windows workstation to do the update, but since my SME is neary always up and running, I guess it could do the job.

I suppose it's possible to schedule a cron job to run the update script on a regular basis. The problem you will face are :-

1. detecting an IP change on your internet connection since your actual connection to the outside world is "through the Barricade" (sic).

2. detecting what your external IP is since the Barricade is a NAT box and your external address would not normally be passed through to the internal network. Could be wrong have not used the Barricade much and that was quite a while ago.

OK! I see. But at DynDNS.org there are update-clients for Linux/Unix. Are any of those suitable for my SME 5.1.4?

You will still have the same problem as the update clients will still need to know what your external IP address is and unless your Barricade supplies the info to them, they will not know what to set the IP to at DynDNS.org. Besides, the built in update mechanism in SME works fine, as long as you are using it the right way.

OK! I know, I know, but the update clients knows the external IP since my Barricade supplies the info to them. I'm 100% sure because I an using a client at my windows workstation on the same LAN as SME.

By the way, I'm not using the SME as a gateway because the location of the ADSL modem and Barricade is in another building. In that building another workstation are on the same LAN. (Wow, that was a tricky one...)    ;o)
So either I have to move my SME to the other building or move my ADSL-box or dig in the ground and put another cat-5 between the buildings, as you see, I hope to find a client-solution on my SME.

How is your SME connected to the Barricade in the other building ?

I still don't know enough about how the Barricade can supply the external IP to your LAN stations unless your software is contacting an external service which returns the originating IP address to it (so it's getting the external IP, but not from the Barricade). This won't work with SME unless you have such a software that will run under SME.

-The Barricade is connected to the ADSL on WAN-side, and 3 computers at the LAN-side (1 SME, and 2 workstations)

- The Barricade, the ADSL-box and workstation 1 in building A

- One HUB,  the SME-sever and workstation 2 in building B

- Cable from Barricade ( building A) to HUB (building B)

The client i use on workstation is Barricade-Monitor v5.1.1.0

YESS! It works fine with "ddclient v3.6.2" found at Unix/Linux clients at DynDNS.org

Now everything is fine.

Linux is FUN!
