7.4 Backup documentation
« on: December 01, 2008, 01:06:29 PM »
I was looking at the new backup to workstation section in server-manager, but struggled to understand some of the choices. They might seem obvious if you wrote it them, but unfortunately they aren't obvious to me !

Is there any documentation for the new section ? I can only see docs relating to the older versions.

Bits I struggled on :
Quote
Each set may contain saved data for several consecutive days. In this case first backup of the set is full backup, others daily backups are incremental.

Number of rotating backup sets
Daily backups in each set
I would like to do one full backup on a Friday, with incrementals on the remaining days.

Can anyone advise on this ?

I have Monday as my full backup day with increments on other days. I also have 3 "rotating back up sets". This means I have the current week in one set, the week before in another and the week before that in another set as well.

I'd recomend at least two rotating backup sets so you always have the week before the current week just in case something happens to the current weeks set as it is being updated.

I've set "Daily backups in each set" to 7 and "Full backup is allowed on" to Monday.
Cheers
Dave.

Thanks for the reply - think I get it now........... :-)

Each set is comprised of a 'complete' backup plus however main daily incremental 'sets' ?

I presume this is so that you can put more than one 'complete' backup + 'incrementals' on a disk/share ?

My suggested wording for the boxes would be something along the lines of :

Complete back up (Number of rotating backup sets)

Number of incremental backups (Daily backups in each set)

We only have the office open Monday - Thursday and they are used to changing the disk on Thursday evening before they go home so I guess I run the main backup Thursday evening with increments to follow.

I would change disks with each set so I guess one set with daily sets at 7 ?

Almost, a "set" comprises a full back up plus however many daily incrementals.

I presume this is so that you can put more than one 'complete' backup + 'incrementals' on a disk/share ?
Yes, they are stored in a directory tree <Full Server Name>/set0, <Full Server Name>/set1, etc etc.

In the event of a restore is it necessary to restore the full backup and all of the incrementals?

Thanks for your help ..
