After install, system hangs with "LI" on
« on: March 19, 2000, 07:52:57 PM »
so the install appeared to go well.  but when i boot, all i get is "LI" and the system hangs.  i suppose it is trying to load LILO?

if anyone is able to suggest something, here are my hardware specs:

IBM PC 750 - Pentium 90
96MB RAM
onboard S3Vision864 video
onboard Crystal Audio Controller CD-4231
4.2 GB IDE drive (master)
IDE CD-ROM (slave)
D-Link PCI Ethernet DFE-530Tx+
Linksys PCI Ethernet LNE100Tx

thanks for any advice!

Hello Charles,

I'm not certain, but it sounds like an old BIOS trying to deal with a large disk drive. If you created the emergency boot floppy during installation, try the following:

1. After installation, boot from the emergency boot floppy. The system should work properly and prompt you to select an initial password. Go ahead and select a password. (You can actually use the system this way, as long as you always boot from the floppy.)

2. To make the system work properly without using the emergency floppy, type Ctrl-Alt-F3 to get a root prompt. Log in to the "root" account using the initial password you  selected in step 1.

3. Edit the /etc/lilo.conf file using either "vi", "emacs-nox" or "pico" as your editor. If you don't know any Unix editors, use pico - that's the easiest to use.  Look for the line containing the word "prompt", and beneath it add a line containing the word "linear". Save your change and quit the editor.

4. Run the command: /sbin/lilo

5. Remove your emergency floppy from the disk drive, and try rebooting your system using Ctrl-Alt-Del.

Please let us know whether that worked!
Good luck and best regards,
- Joe

yes, joe, the instructions worked great.  thanks a bunch.

now i just need to figure out the server and gateway configuration.
when i set things up as a server only, i was able to successfully run
the "connect to internet" test.  however, i cannot get the same
results under the server and gateway configuration.

i have 2 NICs which are both loading OK.  however, i am a little
confused with the IP address configurations, especially the local IP,
versus the server and gateway IP address.  i'll spend some time with
the manual before posting another help request.

oh, and just to let you know, i had to juggle my NICs a bit to get
things this far.  i was not able to get my D-Link DFE-530Tx+ loaded,
despite it being on your list of approved Ethernet cards.  the
auto-detect wanted to load it as a RTL8139.  i tried it as that and
manually selecting it.  neither would allow the card to boot
properly.  i finally settled on my IBM PCI EtherJet and the LinkSys
PCI LNE100Tx.
