Server Mapping
« on: May 17, 2002, 10:33:43 AM »
I have successfully hooked up my E-smith box, but with one problem.  I have two computers running on it right now and the only one that recognizes it as a shared server is the one with Windows ME.  The other computer is running win2k.

I can type in my ip address and access it via the web, I can ping it using DOS, but I can't find it through windows explorer, on the win 2k box.

Any help??

Ken

Are you in the same Workgroup?

In reality I have had some difficulties trying to get on as a domain but never had any trouble using a worgroup setup in win 2000.

Are you using DHCP and is the win2000 computer setup that way and did you reboot so it would take effect.

If you have set a fixed ip number on the windows 2000 machine you must be in the same group of 255 numbers excluding 0 and 255. ie 192.168.0.1 to 192.168.0.254 and of course you can't be on the same number as another machine.

You can't use "administrator" as a user name because it is too long. Creating a user in lowercase called admin and giving full administrative privileges on Windows 2000 computer is a good start. In case you plan to allow remote access in future password should be at least 8 characters as a 4 character password takes a few seconds to crack.
