NEW TO SME 7.0
« on: January 17, 2009, 02:46:38 AM »
Hi Im new to SME and come from a strong exchange Active directory achitecture. I have now started my own business.

I have a client that has a SME 7.0 and I must admit I actually do like the product.

The previous IT guy really didnt do much with SME, he installed it and configured file sharing and went. Im now stuck with a product I really dont know. I have supported linux before and everything is comingback to me.

Firstly the SME server had no internet access. I have now configured that as I put the server in server mode and sat it behind a Sonicwall.
When I did this First thing the CLAM AV updated itself, it was like 3 years out of date and the machine started downloading updates.

One thing I want to do it just install updates. Im worried that the server may die as it probably hasnt had an update in 3 years.
When I log into the webconsole I go to Software installer and it states
There are updates available for your system. These updates should be installed as soon as possible
In software installer options they have been set as the following:
Check for updates daily enabled
Manage individual packages disabled
Enable repositories What was highligted was Addons, OS and updates.

My question is can I just click the install available updates? Will it give me a list of updates to do or as soon as I click install will it just install the updates.
Im some what worried that trhe server may die and not come back.

My second question can SME do DNS? Its currently not doing DHCP anymore

Assistance from experienced users is greatly appreicated.

1) backup?

2) from wiki
Quote
DNS

Domain Name Service. Refers to the software and protocols involved in translating
domain names to IP addresses. Your server provides DNS lookup services for your local
network, and your ISP typically also provides you with the IP addresses of DNS servers.
These servers do not need to be configured into your server as the DNS server that is
provided with your server will correctly resolve all local and Internet names.

Like everyone who uses SME server, you should read the User Manual at least twice.

Well, welcome to this community.

It is always recommended to do a backup before applying updates. In your case, I would say it is mandatory.

Since you state you are using SME Server 7.0 you are a bit behind on updating, indeed. I know the 7.0 release had a problem updating through the server manager. The best way is to make a backup first as others already stated.
The best way to upgrade to a higher version is a CD based upgrade. Download the latest 7.x ISO and insert it in your server. Then reboot and have the system start from CD and choose upgrade.

Before starting this is a must read as well: http://wiki.contribs.org/Updating_to_SME_7.2#Upgrading_from_a_system_prior_to_7.1
