AutoEnrollment fails on XP after SME 6.01 - 7.4 upgrade
« on: January 19, 2009, 09:05:22 PM »
I have XP workstations that were attached to my domain on SME 6.01.  After upgrading the SME to 7.4, the workstations still appear to be on the domain, and can use folders on the SME with appropriate permissions, but when connecting to each other via shared folders they do not authenticate.  Windows Event Viewer gives me the following error:

Automatic certificate enrollment for local system failed to contact the active directory (0x8007054b).  The specified domain either does not exist or could not be contacted.
  Enrollment will not be performed.

Do I need to tweak something on the XP machines since SME upgraded?  I already imported the reg file for the server on each workstation.

Thanks.

Hi

as you can read from the error message, it's something related to AD.. so you can ignore..

anyway, if you want not to have such a line in your event-log, read here, the first comment

Any idea why the workstations won't authenticate from each other?

hi

did you upgrade directly from SME 6.01 to 7.4? how did you upgrade? I remember something about issues in samba after upgrading from 6.X.. please search the forums and the wiki.. Meanwhile, you can try adding a new user on SME, loggin on a pc with the new account and trying to access another workstation shares.

I upgraded by creating a backup of 6.01-01, installing 7.4 clean, and restoring from the backup.

The only thing I have found in the forums are registry settings that I would have implemented several years ago to attach them to the domain on the 6.01-01.  I also notice that the registry settings mentioned include more than the one in the reg file that comes with SME.  Not sure if that makes a difference, but I implemented all of them a while ago.

Interestingly, if I set security on a file in XP, I can query and see all users (including a newly created one).  However, I could not log in as the newly created user.

I just found a post regarding older SME versions, and it said to keep the secrets.tdb file from the old server.  If this wasn't in the backup/restore, I won't be able to recover it.

If that is the case, I think you will need to rejoin those machines to the domain.

To rejoin the workstations, I found this:

http://www.smesmith.de/download/Howtos/samba-howto.html

Is this still valid for current SME versions?

I doubt that, but I suggest you put all further communication in your bug as that is the place to document stuff, running in two channels scatters information which makes it hard for future readers to follow.

I upgraded by creating a backup of 6.01-01, installing 7.4 clean, and restoring from the backup.

Well, that's not really an upgrade.

Did you have a particular reason not to upgrade via CDROM?

I'm not sure what you mean.  7.4 was installed from a CD.

I did not install 7.4 over 6.01-01 because I had many non-base packages installed, and SME's documentation led me to believe that the install would not be smooth that way.
