well.. if you install AoE (Ata over Ethernet) you can use remote hd as they are local..

I'm aware of that. I'm still curious as to what OP intends.

Basically the other machine "spare" is a physical host for lets say "raida" spares.
But working spares that are a  mirror of raida (+non-running spares).
A quick bios order change and spare is up and running as raida in event of total "a" collapse.
Without needing full redundancy on everything.
