Openvpn Help
« on: February 07, 2009, 02:14:04 AM »
I installed openvpn according to the contrib and it was fine.
I installed portopener and opened 1194

My server is in server only mode and my gateway/firewall is my router.
and it is forwarding port 1194 to my box

When I scan from outside the network port 1194 does not respond / is not open.

Any suggestions?

If you have time to help me, ssh works on my box and I have remote management on my router if you can pook your head in send me a pm.

Thank you for your time,

Derek L

I'm far from a VPN expert but it sounds a little awkward to have a VPN server on anything else than on the gateway. At least it complicates things (and probably reduce security).

I suggest a router with vpn feature or taking advantage of SME server capability's and use it as the gateway (and VPN server, router, firewall, etc).

Eventually thats the way it will be but I had to get it up and going and get out of town.
I also couldnt chance using it as my gateway and not configuring it right leaving my family without internet for 2 weeks.

I used nmap to scan the ports instead of generic scanner and its open and I now have openvpn working thanks.

For the sake of education (and my curiosity), what was the problem?

My problem was incompetency. I was using a bunch of different port scanners that only scan tcp not the udp.  When I installed nmap it showed the port open|stealthed which was good enough for me.  I went ahead with the install and it worked like butter according to the lovley openvpn guide located on this fine site :)
