External USB 2 HDD causing "bad magic number" error
« on: February 07, 2009, 04:15:48 PM »
Hi all

I have been trying to get a customer server up and running with USB backup. Unfortunately, a day after formatting not one but TWO external HDDs (LaCie 1TB drives) I got a really weird error when connecting either of them.

The error was something about a "bad magic number" for the superblock. Restoring a backup superblock didn't help; nor did re-formatting the drive.

The drives were attached via a PCI USB 2 card. I'm wondering whether that might be at fault rather than the drives. I'll plug the drives up to another machine and see what happens tomorrow, but has anyone got some useful advice in the meantime?

Thanks
