Wireless Setup question

I use a wireless router to add wireless to my network. I let my SME server run dhcp and turn off the dhcp on the router. I previously used a Dlink router and the wireless only worked if booted the laptop attached to the wired lan. Its like its not able to reach the dhcp server to get an ip. I did not use wireless much so it was not a problem. Well that router went out a few months ago and I was graciously given a netgear 824v2 a few days ago and I have set it up and I have the same problem. I actually have 2 laptopt now and need to be able to fire up and go with out having to boot up wired first.

I think I know what the problem is but I plan to upgrade my nework in a few months and get a gigabit cards and switches for all the pcs,  I am trying to figure out which of the following should I pursue to get the wireless up and running without having to plug in everytime.

Setup the wireless router on a different ip range and let it issue out ip addresses for the wireless segment and any pc that might be connected on the segment and then add the ip segment  to the sme server to provide network services to that network ?

Or

Move the wireless router and hook it directly to the SME server as currently SME server is hooked to a switch and then the router is plugged into the switch ?

Or

Should do I need consider adding in a 3rd network card to the sme server ?

Or

Should I try using an actual access point instead of trying to use a wireless router as one ?

Thanks for any pointers in advance.

If it is a wireless router, then it needs to supply ipaddresses on a subnet for the wireless clients and route them to the SME wired LAN. If it's an access point, it can parse the ipaddressing from the SME OK.

Put it in AP mode, and let the box get it's dhcp from SME as well and all will work fine. i normally enter the AP's MAC address into SME hostname and gve it a fixed IPadrress in the SME subnet.
