restore question
« on: February 15, 2009, 01:24:33 AM »
I am wanting to do a clean install on a server. The existing server is v7.3 and I am wanting to go to 7.4. my questions is this, Is it better to load a clean v7.3, restoring the data and upgrading to v7.4 or is installing v7.4 and restoring the v7.3 data ok? Is there a preference on the restore process?

Usually an upgrade will work fine. However, you should do a couple of things:

  • Back up your data first - just in case
  • Read the release notes, especially with regards to changes made to the system
  • Be sure to update your contribs after the main upgrade

If you do unfortunately end up with a stuffed server after the upgrade, and bugzilla and the forums aren't able to help you fix whatever has gone wrong, you can always do a clean install and restore your 7.3 data.

David

the reason I asked, is if I do a clean install using 7.4, then restore a 7.3 backup the backup built into sme quits working. but if I do a clean backup with v7.3 then restore a 7.3 backup and upgrade to 7.4 everything works fine. I have been able to duplicate this on three different test servers. Any idea what might be going on.

Ah, well that is different. As it says at the top:

wasn't sure if this was a bug or not since it works in all other aspects.

Well, generally if something is supposed to work, and doesn't, it's a bug - or at least worth reporting as one for further investigation.

When you have created a bug, please post the number here for future reference.
