Vmware Server 2 - cannot add permissions
« on: February 26, 2009, 06:14:07 PM »
Hello community!
I have an updated sme server 7.4 and i installed vmware server 2 (VMware-server-2.0.0-122956.i386.rpm) using the method described on the wiki.
Everything works fine, except that i cannot set permissions...whenever i click on it, it will open the window for an instant and then go grey

I already did the permissions "trick" mentioned in vmware's known issues (http://www.vmware.com/support/server2/doc/releasenotes_vmserver2.html#issues), of changing NextAceId to 12 or above.

firebug reports "uncaught exception: vmtn.core.IllegalStateException: Dialog has no owner.", but i cannot find anything in the vmware logs that could help.

anyone got any ideas on getting at least an error log out of vmware?
or anyone that installed vmware server 2 on sme can check the permissions option and see if it works?
since this same binary install in ubuntu works perfectly, I believe this is an SME issue

thanks in advance

works fine for me to get to the permission menus, select users, and set permission tick boxes. I didn't try to save it though as it doesn't seem you are getting that far.

Did you try a different browser to see if the issue is still there.

Also I would be suspicious if you recently updated java.

yes, I tried Firefox (OSX, Linux), Opera (OSX, Linux), and Internet Explorer 7 (Vista). I will try upgrading java, but it doesn't sound right, since vmware server 2 running on ubuntu (same machine that I tried to access my sme server's install) works absolutely fine on the same firefox.
I will also try to remove my current install, download the rpm again and see if that makes a difference.

thanks

ok. Nothing else springs to mind but if you haven't already, you should check the log files on the server. I usually find any server related issue in those.

At least you know it does work for someone on 7.4!

Out of curiosity, what account are you using to log in the web interface with?

I first tried using "admin" and since it didn“t work, I tried reinstalling and setting it as "root", which gave no positive results either

"setting it as root"?

I just installed and then simply use the root user/pass. No mods required AFAIR.

The install is done only from a root shell.

excuse me, I didn't explain myself properly.
During the initial configuration, the script asks what user would you like to use, and i selected "admin". Since doing so resulted in a non-working configuration for me, I uninstalled and reinstalled, but this time setting the user to "root", which didn't work well either.
Yes this was all done from a root shell, using ssh
