Boot up problem - interface 'dev xxx' not found
« on: March 05, 2009, 06:54:06 PM »
Hello,
I have been running SME as my firewall / gateway for years (currently 7.4). I have just changed ISP and reconfigured the server (it is in server/gateway mode) for the WAN connection. It was PPoE and with the new ISP it was changed to static IP.

After reconfiguring it will no longer boot up. During the boot up sequence at the 'Bringing up eth1' section it continually spits out an error: interface 'dev xxxx' not found.

I have tried interruption the boot sequence by trying to go to interactive (I) and also rebooted from disk using 'sme rescue' but have not found a way to change the config so that it will at least not try and bring up eth1 until I can reconfigure it.

Any help would be appreciated (it is also my file server so I would like to get those files !).

After reconfiguring it will no longer boot up.

I am not saying it is a bug. I am looking for information on how to make changes before rebooting. Does that go in Bugzilla?

Maybe you could clarify this better.  You imply that you have reconfigured it and yet you say "until I can reconfigure it".  That is contradictory.

What Charlie is suggesting is that if you went through the normal "configure this server" panels in server console changing the PPoE connection to a static IP AND you can not boot up then that is a bug as the system does not work that way.  I have changed modes from PPoE to Static on the same server several times without problem.  IF that is what you mean, then raise a bug report, you will get better help.

Remember, raising a bug report is NOT accusing the program that it doesn't work, it is a method of tracking problem issues better than these forums.  Don't be shy.

By the way, if the server can't find the device after rebooting several times, it may be a hardware failure.

Sigh...let me just phrase this as a question: is there a way before the system boots up to change the configuration of the eth1 (WAN) interface to use a different config method (i.e. DHCP vs. Static IP)?

I ask because I cannot bring the system up to the point where I can use the configuration manager to do this.

I have applied for a Bugzilla account and will put in a bug for the original part of this when I can log in.

I don't know of any, but then I'm not a developer.

Then it sounds like a bug.

That's the best thing to do.  As I said, you'll get better help that way.

Here's are similar (if not same issue) on this bug:

http://bugs.contribs.org/show_bug.cgi?id=3161

As you can see from reading this was an effect of the end user having someone do their "own custom work" in the past.

So please do raise a bug in case this is a bug. Thanks.

I know, I shouldn't react, but I couldn't resist. I assume he has raised the bug report.

What would happen if you physically removed the nic before trying to boot ? I've succesfully reconfigured a Windows machine that way once.

Yes .. I have raised a bug. And I can't remove it..it is integrated into the motherboard. I wonder if I can disable it in the BIOS......

Yes .. I have raised a bug.
Very good, any change you could add a reference to the bug for future readers?

Problem was resolved (worked around?) by waiting 45 minutes at which point the system finished booting up and the configuration was changed. I have closed the bug.

Thanks.
