Welcome to the forums :)

Unfortunately Conexant modems are generally winmodems, which means that it is unlikely to work with SME Server. You may have better luck with an external modem connected via a serial port.

2.8Ghz is fine for a home server, and while 512Mb of RAM is a little old-fashioned, it should be adequate. The Broadcom should be fine.

FYI: My homeserver:
PIII-1000MHz, 512 Mb, 2 x 160Gb RAID1.
I bought new harddisks, needed more space and these were a lot more quiet...

If 40 Gb is enough space for you, I'd seriously consider getting a second (used) 40Gb disk. The advantage of having RAID1 to protect you from disk failure is worth every cent...

The real fun part is you can already go ahead and install, and add the 2nd disk later! Just read the manuals and the wiki about RAID.

Linmodems:

Search for CentOS4 or RedHat Enterprise Linux 4 drivers.

edit: never mind this image isn't corrupt I selected the one that terminate after start helps if you burn the right one. Sorry.
