Horde Maintenance Tasks: Need Advice!
« on: March 25, 2009, 03:44:51 AM »
Hi,

What specific maintenance tasks must I perform in order to make sure my SME Server is "healthy"?

This SME Server is running for about a year and it's only used as a calendar + webmail server to 10 users. In the last 2 months, it takes several seconds to open an email message or changing folders.

When I configured it first, I've configured Horde to delete all the email attachments for all messages with more than 3 months and for all users, but I've done nothing more.

So, with about 10.000 emails x 10 users, I think maybe it's time to:
1 - perform some database "cleanning tasks"?... Delete emails? Manually?...
2 - run some scripts?... If so, what, how?...

Any help would be very appreciated, for I wanted to avoid a fresh install.

By the way, if some Horde expert happens to read this, please tell me how can I create an email account exactly equal to the account of another user! This would be much helping!

I've found this solution, but I'm not sure if this applies to SME Server:

Can anybody take a look?

Ok, I've gone a little further and read about template files/folders in the SME Server Development Manual.
But, I'd like to hear someone experienced in this matter..

There is not need to mantain nothing. Only ensure you have the correct disk space to hold all emails of the users, or use the quota panel to restrict them to an specify size.

Well, I'm kind of lost here...
If the reason for Horde becoming slower is not the quantity of emails, what's it then?...
We've changed for an internet connection 4 times faster, the server is the same with plenty of RAM and disk space.
Is there a way to make a diagnosis at SME Server and try to find out what's happening?

If the server is slow to opening an email message or folder, then there is a Horde issue and not SME issue. I advice you to search at the horde mailing list.

Anyway there are a few test to do before you can asked at horde.

Have you one user with a few emails messages, no more than 100, and see what happens with this account? Verify opening emails messages and folders. If it is fast, so the issue is the big emails messages. For this you can move some messages to another folder ans see what happens at the inbox.

Can you detail you hardware?

I missed one issue. Access at your horde with admin rights, and then verify if horde configuration files are up to date, or you must regenerate them.
