Adaptec 29160N supported?
« on: March 22, 2000, 10:42:15 PM »
Will the new Adaptec 29160N SCSI card work with e-smith 3.1?  I currently have a 2940UW in the e-smith, but I wanted to upgrade to the 29160N to support the Ultra160 speed of the 36GB Quantum Atlas IV drive I just ordered.

Thanks,
David

I'm sorry but I don't know the answer to that question. You'll need to check the RedHat hardware compatibility list, or ask
your local Linux users group. There is no mention of "29160N"
in the linux scsi driver directory.

I am sure that if it doesnt directly support the 29160N it will be able to use an older driver. But that kind of defeats the purpose of buying a new SCSI card. Maybe upgrade to E-Smith 4. I did the upgrade and the whole process took maybe 20 minutes, just use the backup before hand and all the data is restored in the new version. I have noticed some definite improvments in load times and reduced errors with 4.0b6 :)

Thanks for the responses.

I checked the RedHat HCL (http://www.redhat.com/support/hardware/intel/60/rh6.0-hcl-i.ld-6.html#ss6.3) and they list the "AIC-789x" as supported; the 29160N is based on the AIC-7899v2 chip so it looks like I will be ok.

Now if only UPS will show up with the packages...

I don't know if it is currently supported but I was able to view the online launch that Adaptec had recently and the first question that was asked during the audience question/answer period was whether Adaptec would be releasing a driver for Linux and the answer was yes. :) Not sure what method they will use to get it out but I thought it was cool that they were asked that question first. (and no it wasn't me who asked, I was a bit slower than someone else)
