[solved] samba + windows vista + sme7.4
« on: March 30, 2009, 05:52:13 AM »
hi, first time i am using sme server, i have found many use from it but i still need to figure out how to use SME Server for a windows xp network install, if anyone know how to do it please point me to the right direction because i haven't found a tutorial on the net on how to do so using sme7.4.....but the main reason for this post is to locate the contrib samba howto page for step by step on running and configuring samba and to connect to it using windows vista.

i have created an ibay so far but i wasn't able to connect to it from vista -> run -> \\xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx  ....i receive an error saying " \\xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx" is not setup to establish a connection on port "file and printer sharing (SMB)" with this computer

server is configured in server-only mode.. here is how everything is connected :  Internet --> adsl modem --> linksys --> sme server, pc1 running vista, pc2 running xp, pc3 needs xp network install.. i am planning on creating a wireless network soon.

cheers

Edit: addes [solved] to subject

Welcome to the forums :)

Can you ping the SME Server's IP address from your Vista machine?

i can access the ibay via web (with user/pass) and also use ftp and access apache. Just now i did a ping on the server and i have 0% loss, the server is alive.

i have tried to connect to the sme7 workgroup from windows xp also, can't connect.

Do you have any security software installed? Can you access a share on the XP machine from the Vista PC, and visa-versa?

I suspect that your security software is getting in the way.

I had trouble with vista as well, connecting it to the server. I found I had to change a registry key in vista.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa

create the following DWORD value (if not there already).....
LmCompatibilityLevel

and set its value to: 1

if it did exisit it should say 3, so change it to : 1

as soon as i change this i was able to connect to the server.

already exist DWORD LmCompatibilityLevel 1 , this is frustating, there's even no dhcp manager... my adsl modem router says the sme7 pc is on static ip -no dhcp address meaning i cannot change it to DMZplus mode therefor my sme server cannot have his own IP address.

searching thru the forum i was looking for a dhcp manager and came accross this topic, http://forums.contribs.org/index.php/topic,38335.0.html ...which lead me to this topic, http://forums.contribs.org/index.php/topic,35975.0.html .... now, is there anything similar to it beside hostnames and addresses in server-manager, a real dhcp manager port for 7.4 will be a smart idea i think...

the output of dhcpactiv.sh for me was the MAC Address and Ip Address of my adsl router and my windows vista .....i dont know how to change ip from being static to dynamic.

for e-smith-dhcpmanager-1.5-1     SME 6.x go here: http://www.developit.fr/FichePratique/SMEServer/

Hi wires and welcome to this community.

- are all the clients and SME in the same network? and in the same workgroup?
- did you see anything wron in the logs? you can read them in server-manager
- can you confirm you can connect to SME via ftp/ssh/web but not via smb?
- can you confirm you are expreiencing the same issue from vista pc and from xp one?

please take the time to read carefully the documentation ("gurus" say almost twice) as everything you neeed to know about SME is there

thank you
Ciao
Stefano

thanks stefano.

all the clients are on the same network and in the same workgroup, (even though i heard it was possible to use different workgroup name), i dont know much about the logs yet so i dont know what log to look into, i can confirm though i can use FTP, web... but cant connect to SMB, i dont know even though how to connect to it, i tried start --> run --> \\xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx   but i get an error.

Yes, i confirm i have the same issue in vista and xp home. i am reading, that's all i've been doing lately, reading the docs.

wires:

can you connect to your server via ssh?

go to server-manager -> Reboot & shutdown panel, choose "reconfigure".. then try again: it should reconfigure your server (re-apply all the configurations and re-create all the config files around) and reboot it

let us know

Stefano

p.s. DON'T edit manually any conf file

i've made some changes though (not directly to conf files) if i recreate the conf files some settings will be deleted right ? i have added some RPMs too.

yes i can connect via SSH to the server no problem.

ok.. in this case things are more complex.

first of all: if you made changes via server-manager panels, you will not loose anything with a reconfiguration

please raise a bug giving all the info needed to reproduce your problem.. attach to the bug (ATTACH, not copy in the message) the output of
Code: [Select]
/sbin/e-smith/auditools/newrpms
/sbin/e-smith/auditools/templates

finally, report here the reference to the bug

thank you
Ciao
