Can I split the install over multiple RAIDs?
« on: April 06, 2009, 01:38:15 AM »
Can I move the /home/e-smith/files directory to another disk?  I have a Dell PowerEdge server, with a 36GB raid and a 250GB raid.  I'd like to install SME on the 36GB but move the /home/e-smith/files directory (and sub directories) to  the 250GB raid for more space.

The 250GB raid is a pair of 250GB SATA on a Promise software SATA raid card.  The 36GB raid is a pair of SCSI drives in the Dell hardware RAID drive bays.  Unfortunately this server won't boot off of the SATA card, therefore I need to boot from the 36GB raid and 36GB is kinda small for a server.

Thanks.

Personally I would remove the 36Gb drives and associated RAID card, and remove the Promise RAID card, and just use the two 250Gb SATA drives in software RAID1, with the OS and data on the same drives.
It will be easier to maintain, easier to get up and running in the event of hardware failure, and survive OS upgrades without issues.

Also the software RAID1 will probably perform better than the RAID cards.

You can also move the drives to other hardware quite easily (when using software RAID1), and run OK in degraded mode (ie with one failed drive).

If you must, then see

for two articles re adding extra drives.
