Backup not backing up mounted drives
« on: May 27, 2002, 01:29:56 PM »
Hi,

I have a 5.1.2 server running 3 SCSI drives, 1 for the O/S in a RAID 1 config, 1 for user files and 1 for ibays. When I perform a backup to the inbuilt SCSI tape drive, the only things backed up are on my O/S drive (including the old files where the new drives have supposedly taken over duties) , not the mounted drives (which are the ones I REALLY want to backup). If I tail the message file, the only device being backed up is confirmed as /dev/md1 when I need /dev/sda and dev/sdb to be backed up as well.

If I do a backup to Desktop, I get a 2.5 GB file as I would expect, to tape it's only 350MB

Logs indicate that the O/S disk is successful in the backup and the dump size would be about right but I need to know how to ensure that the data drives are also backed up. They appear to be correctly mounted and I cannot see where the old files are that are being backed up are lurking.

I have checked the contents as per recommendations from Darrels how-to to confirm this. Any help would be appreciated.

HAve done a desktop backup and it backed everything up fine (I was able to jump in and check from this W2K PC). To explain further, I was using the back-up-now rpm, not the standard timed backup. What would the difference be between the settings for a desktop backup and a tape backup?

OK, got is sussed with a reboot and a resave of the config for tape backup, now recognises the extra disks. Problem is that now the backup is too large to fit on the device and the whole routine gets aborted.

Given that the total size of all files in 9 GB and that a desktop backup is 2.5 GB in size, why wouldn't that fit onto an 8 GB tape unit? Is ts because there is not enough space on the boot/OS hard drive to create the file before putting it on tape?

If yes, where can I change this setting so that it creates the archive on one of the larger hard-drives?
