I'm getting too much spam on my SME Server 7.3
« on: May 04, 2009, 03:03:06 AM »
Hi everyone
I have SME Server 7.3
Although I have enabled all these items already:
Virus scanning    Enabled
Spam filtering    Enabled
Spam sensitivity    Custom
Custom spam tagging level 4
Custom spam rejection level    12
Sort spam into junkmail folder Enabled
Modify subject of spam messages    Enabled

I continue getting too much spam....

Can you help me to solve this problem? or tell me what to do???
thanks

Additionally enable executable content filtering as that is likely to catch some virus infected messages that are also spam. See server manager Email panel.

Additionally enable RBL rejection see
http://wiki.contribs.org/SME_Server:Documentation:FAQ#Real-time_Blackhole_List_.28RBL.29

and please assess (and modify as required) the default lists as some are aggressive and may block wanted messages from senders.
See
http://wiki.contribs.org/Updating_to_SME_7.2#RHSBL_Servers
and
http://wiki.contribs.org/Updating_to_SME_7.2#DNSBL_Servers

This is conservative and safe:
config setprop qpsmtpd RBLList zen.spamhaus.org:whois.rfc-ignorant.org:dnsbl.njabl.org
signal-event email-update

Additionally enable bayesian filtering and the LearnAsSpam folder concept.
You can manually and automatically teach spamassassin to learn about more types of spam messages, and thus over time get better at detecting spam.
See
http://wiki.contribs.org/SME_Server:Documentation:FAQ#Bayesian_Autolearning
and
http://wiki.contribs.org/SME_Server:Documentation:FAQ#The_Sonora_Communications_.22Spam_Filter_Configuration_for_SME_7.22_howto
and
http://www.sonoracomm.com/support/19-inet-support/49-spam-filter-configuration-for-sme-7

It's all been published on the wiki, you just have to learn to read the documentation (the FAQ in this case).

....AND please update to sme7.4 and the latest updates, as little changes & improvements are always being released. Keep your server updated too !

By enabling RBL alone, you should see a huge reduction in spam, typically 75 - 95 % less. Note all those messages will be rejected by your server so you will never see them.

Another few things that has helped me a lot is:

1) Install the unofficial clamav signatures. Take a lot of spam away. http://wiki.contribs.org/Email#Anti_Virus

2) Enable DCC in SpamAssassin (/etc/mail/spamassassin/v310.pre)

3) Reduce rejection level to 9-10 - you will not see any false negatives

If you ISP is relaying mail (port 25 closed for direct mail to you) the RBL is unfortunately not going to help you - all is coming form your ISP and I hope they are listed OK.
