I think it would be nice for forum readers if some of the main contributers would be willing to make a digest of it. I have followed the threads, but I am not sure all of the readers here will dive in to them.

Would it be possible to ....
- rename the forum to "Governance" or something like that so it is useful for matters more than just elections
- move it to be below "Announcements" but above "Contribs.org forums" to make it highly visible
- put a link to it within "Quick Links" in the right pane of the opening wiki page?

I don't now. I suggest you raise a bug for it in the bugtracker against the contribs.org website. I do not administrate the forums, I am only a moderator.

Darrell, one reason for the silence might be that outgoing emails from the list have stopped - so people don't know that there are new posts. I have emailed the list administrator about the problem.

Well I'm here, so count me in. I've read most of the list discussions.

As a long time user I would like to be able to contribute where I can. I'm no coder unfortunately, but will be happy to help where I can.

I think SME / Contribs is an excellent distro -a real hidden gem - and would dearly love to see it continue, and increase in popularity. I have commented elsewhere here before that a combination of SME + an exchange replacement would be phenomenal. I personally run it with vTiger on top for CRM, and another with Egroupware.

I think the core developers are excellent and never receive the praise they deserve.

The biggest problem that I can see here is apathy from the users. And I'm not sure anyone knows the cure for that. Anyway, I'll put my hand in the air for something, even though I was always warned to never volunteer for anything............

Does anyone have any ideas of the current costs for hardware / etc for maintaining the servers etc etc ? I am just wondering about bashing a few users for a few quid/euros/bucks................

Hi,
     I am attempting to start a new business which among other things would be around
SME. One senior member of the community stated that SME was a dead end, shrinking rather than growing. I have read all the discussion on this thread of governance and child threads and it just peters out. What is the current status of leadership of the distro?

Before anyone says I haven't given back, I have a contrib under development and would be involved in a variety of ways. But if the distro has a limited future I will move on.

I hope the senior member provided you with evidence of the shrinkage.

Most of the governance discussions take place on an invitation-only mailing list at the moment. The intent was to have something ready for the general SME community by now; we are a few months behind schedule, but I believe we are still making progress. There isn't any "official" leadership at the moment, but there *is* a hard-working team of volunteers who are very active. Three of us volunteers are working to re-establish a formal leadership structure for the project.

I hope to read your posts on the devinfo mailing list regarding your contrib.

I think the SME distro will survive and prosper as long as there is a committed team to work on it, and as long as it continues to attract new users. Right now, that seems to be the case.

Thanks Peter. That is what I wanted to know. I have been on the outskirts of SME/E-Smith for a long time since at least version 5 possibly version 3. Left for a while and now am back wanting to get involved and to make a living out of open source software.

what does it means, there are around 30 000 users of sme in the world ?....it's not  enough!!!!
