E-Smith Manager Problems
« on: March 23, 2000, 10:14:30 PM »
Hi, I am running e-smith 4.0, I had originally intended to run it only as a dedicated server. But I changed my mind and turned it into a gateway as well. I use a cable modem with a static IP. My problem is that ever since I changed my remote system (the one that is trying to access esmith manager) I am not allowed to access it. I went to http://www.grc.com and performed a port scan and it says that my computer has the same IP as the server. I think this is the problem with E-SMith, I tried to edit the template files but I couldnt figure it out. 127.0.0.1 and 192.168.1.0 where the two hosts that had access to that directory. But my server has an IP that is not one of these. What can I do?

I assume you have 2 net cards in the system as per the normal e-smith gateway setup, It sounds like you have it connected backwards (the "inside" net card hooked to the cable modem and the "outside" net card hooked to your local lan) fixing that should get you your manager back.  Unless you are trying to use it with only one net card... then I can't really help you, I'm not THAT smart.

no... this is proper opperation with IP Masqurading, which is what e-smith and most other linux gateways use to proxy the internet.
