Zarafa install on smeserver-8beta2 fails
« on: May 29, 2009, 09:11:44 PM »
Installed zarafa-6.20.6 and the latest smeserver-zarafa on Smeserver-8beta2 with updates as per wiki that seems to install successfully

Attempt to Enable mail and apply delivery to zarafa for all users fails with error

# /etc/e-smith/events/actions/qmail-update-user
Can't call method "dir" on an undefined value at /etc/e-smith/events/actions/qmail-update-user line 57.

Thanks in advance
Jon..

You did not install "as per wiki" as the wiki states:

Zarafa (like most SME7 contribs) is not SME8 compatible.

If you are trying to help in making the Zarafa contrib compatible with SME8, you need to do that in the bug tracker, not in the forums.

I was trying to install it smeserver-8beta2.

No contribs will work (or being developed) on SME Server 8beta x until at least a "release candidate". Thanks.

Update

Installed the latest smeserver-zarafa-0.9.0-31.noarch.rpm and that resolved the issue.
Now back to testing a unified communication solution.

I guess it's just my opinion, but the decision not to make any contribs available for testing with version 8 seems to me to be counterproductive to people who would come on board to push the next version forward.

I run both a production machines, but also run my home box that I could do testing on. I haven't done testing at home because of this mindset.

Yes I understand that some want to make sure the core is working, but it IMHO it pushes those that would be there to test away.

sme8 is still in beta release and significant changes can still occur, which would impact upon contribs.
It has alway been policy not to develop contribs until at least a Release Candidate (RC) version of the new sme "OS" has been released.

To do otherwise would simply be a waste of effort for the developers who release contrib packages. A small change in code say from sme8 beta4 to sme8 RC1 may mean that developers have to rewrite their contrib packages.

You will be far better off to use and test sme beta releases and provide feedback, and to test sme bugs and try to resolve them and also provide feedback. Doing so will speed up the release of an sme8 RC version, and therefore speed up the release of contribs.

The development and testing of contribs will happen when sme8 RC1 is released.
Please change your attitude/opinion and take on board the large workload and development timeline associated with a new release and new contribs, and the need for the sme OS to be reasonably stable before developing contribs.
Keep in mind also that there is only a small set of developers working on the project, so they do not have spare time to waste unnecessarily rewriting contrib packages too early in the cycle.

Yes we all want sme8 & compatible contribs as soon as possible (many wanted it in 2008), but someone has to do the work, so do not expect it to happen to suit your personal timeline.

You can help speed up the process by getting even more involved.

Sorry, I didn't mean to hijack this post.

I am guilty of not providing financial support to this project, but it has been on my mind to do so. Yes the developers deserve to be rewarded for their hard work and dedication. I wish I had large sums to give, but alas no.

Since my needs at home are minimal, I'll look to setup a beta replacement to help with the testing.

I don't mind if people try contribs on sme8, whatever it takes to get more testing done
as long as it's understood a fix won't necessarily be made

I would expect most contribs would work

That more in-line with my thoughts

It's the "No contribs will work (or being developed) on SME Server 8beta x until at least a "release candidate". " verbage that got me.

Something along the line of "Since this is a beta release, one should not expect that a contrib will function correctly. If it does please post some feedback as to your experience, if not post a bug report with the knowledge that the maintainer may or may not provide a fix."

I'm as guilty as the next guy when it comes to being short tempered. I do believe that encouraging those who are or inclined to test, will help push this forward.
