Network Configuration
« on: June 02, 2009, 06:55:32 PM »
Hello All

I have been using an SME server for several years (since 5.5 under Mitel)  and currently have a 7.4 system that is
running in server/gateway mode and is being used as our Internet/E-Mail/Web server.  Our other servers are
1 Redhat Linux system and 3 Novell Netware 3.2 systems.
We are in the process of upgrading the Novell servers to Windows 2003 SBS primarily due the need for MS-SQL server.
I have our SME server setup as "mydomain.com"
I am thinking that if I install the "Advanced Samba" contrib and setup the Windows 2003 system as "main.mydomain.com"
I know that the SME server can not truly join and AD tree but I am hoping that this configuration will allow me to prepare
for the future.
Also another reason for doing it this way instead of using a domain such as "different.local" is the desire of the programmers
to use the Windows with an SQL server for doing .net web based visual basic programs using the sql server.
I know that this might not be the right place for this question but I really need some help Please.

For any interested I believe I have a solution to my problem.

My SME server will still have the domain name "mydomain.com"
The Windoze server will have 1 network card with a static IP address in the
internal LAN range behind the SME server and have the domain name "server.mydomain.com"
Using either OperVPN or RDP (Remote Desktop Protocol) and the right port configuration,
create a tunnel through the SME server to the Windoze server.
This should give us the remote access we need while still allowing us to be protected
byt the SME firewall since the SME server is in server/gateway mode

This is a link to some information on the subject

I Apologize If this was the wrong place for this question to be asked
