Suggestions for SME on notebook with no NIC?
« on: June 07, 2009, 06:36:47 PM »
I know that PCMCIA is not officially supported, likewise USB ethernet. But I have an old Sony notebook that's been in mothballs which is otherwise perfect for this. If anyone knows of a PCMCIA or USB ethernet device that's readily available and can be got working (hopefully inexpensive, too!) could you please let me know?

From my experience a notebook is not a very good medium to install SME Server on, since it is not a server and most of the time lacks the support for all built in hardware.
Be careful whose advice you buy, but be patient with those who supply it. That's certainly true in this case. If the darn thing just had a built-in NIC I'd be good to go.

Still, I hate to give up on it. The notebook isn't of much use for anything else and I can't spare the time to throw together an alternate box to use for a server.

I have a sony vaio as SME server, I'm using a 3com PCMCIA card and worked right out of the box. I'll be able to get the specs of the card tomorrow. This notebook in fact has a internal NIC, but I'm using as server-gateway.

Cool! Surprised to hear it worked OOB. I thought PCMCIA support was disabled by default.
