Topic: What's your favorite softphone

I don't use regularly softphones, but just for tests. I'll have to use one during my holidays as an external extension to my asterisk, and I think that I'll use zoiper. It's the one I prefer.

I also like Ekiga and Kiax.

But I think that all depends on your needs... ie, if you need to use iax, this will eliminate all SIP only softphones, when some of them could be better if you can use SIP. Or if you need or not video can also change your choice !

I used x-lite for a couple weeks in January when I was stuck in a room with no cell phone coverage.  It worked very well - great call quality, easy setup.

I use X-Lite regularly for both local and fixed remote users due to it's native support of presence, video and QoS tagging and found it to be reliable.

I use Zoiper on my laptop when traveling due to it's native support for the IAX protocol and consequent NAT traversal ability but you lose the presence and video capabilities.

I have been following the SIP Communicator project (http://sip-communicator.org) which is still in Alpha status but just recently got a 1-yr funding grant from the NLnet Foundation (http://nlnet.nl/). It's definitely in the Alpha stage - don't try to use this in any kind of a production environment.

Bria Softphone is nice. Most USB Handsets still do not have the drivers to use their keypad buttons though!

We almost never use them but I personally like the Snom360 softphone.  They don't actively develop it anymore but it can do everything a real 360 can.  Its pretty cool.

Under anything a Firefox plugin for iax: http://moziax.mozdev.org/installation.html

And the next one on my test list is Pidgin with this SIP plugin:

Thanks for the note about SIP Communicator. You might want to check Qutecom for a similar software.

Selection criterias are looking like this:
- sip and/or iax
- presence
- video
- usability with usb devices
- localizations

I'm surprised to see that softphones are not that much in use, and I guess it explains why so many softphone projects are not active anymore. I looks like a cell phone with DISA on the PBX does the job.

For now, I'll focus on presence and USB devices...

Well, let's stop franco-canadian jokes ! I tried this softphone, and its nice : easy to use and working well Multiple accounts, SIP and IAX... I think that I'll use it on my laptop as an external extention to use my Asterisk when I'm out of my office. I'll let you know about more experience.
