IP of Client is always changed
« on: June 16, 2009, 03:12:59 AM »
Hi all,

I'm using SME server 7.4 as a Getaways and DHCP server in my office.
And my Client computer uses different type of OS such as Windows, OpenSUSE, Ubuntu....
My problem is that the IP address of Client is always changed when they switch from one OS to other OS.
for example, if a Client uses Windows, the IP address is different when they restart to use OpenSUSE.
What I want to do is that I want my Client get Fix IP address that's assigned from DHCP Server even they change the OS.

Thanks in advance
Phearun

With Windows workstation clients you can force the IP to be issued (by DHCP) based on mac address of the w/s NIC. Configure this in the Hostnames panel in server manager.

I don't know how well it will work for other OS's.

Look in the documentation about static ip, the mac of your nic will always be the same. So SME should attach the static for any os.

I think it should be like that. mac address is still the same for any OS, but I don't know why the ip address is changed. Do we have any ways to set specific IP address base on Mac Address in SME server?

Thanks

Of course this also works for Linux clients and even strange devices like Wifi-phones and printservers. Its not dependent of the client's OS.
