Other useless comments... Tried to contact the 'Author" to no avail. My guess is that we will all have to wait for the official SME 8 release and BTW Joomla does not work with the 'pseudo' PHP 5 kludge. Anyone know of another OS like SME for Linux?   Carl

eBox http://ebox-platform.com/ looks promising. I have looked into it because SME does not support LDAP authentication. There are some how to's in their forums that are realy helpful. eBox documentation is still in developement.

Thanks for the tip. I love SME but I have a few customers that cannot run joomla without php5 in place and the kludge does not work with Joomla. I will setup this other software and see how it works. Carl

I hope LDAP Auth comes out of Beta soon .... but:

I think this bug should be moved to future.Having LDAP auth would be a huge
improvement, but having SME 8 out is IMHO more important. As this feature
represent some big changes in the core distro, it'd also require a lot of work.

Why not use sme8beta4 ?
It is well advanced and all basic functionality is working, at least as good as sme7.4
It also has php5 & mysql5 & I think LDAP integration is more advanced than for sme7.4.
Don't be put off by the beta tag, sme betas work very well. You will be surprised how well once you start using it.
Not all contribs are guaranteed to work at this stage, although many will, so test any must have applications first on a test sme8 server.
The request to use sme8beta4 has come from a key developer so they must think it's well enough advanced to be used with a fair degree of confidence.

I have been testing sme8b4 and have not found any new issues and the b3 issues I found were fixed.
LDAP Auth was not incorporated and it does break some things (Horde LDAP address book for one).

SME8beta4 and SME 7.4 any version, is reported back in Joomla as having an older version of php 4.3.1 ( I think) and Joomla will NOT work with the older version in place. Joomla's third party templates require PHP version 5 in order to operate. There is nothing worse than setting up a new box, adding the software only to find out that it isn't working. Yeah Mary, report this to bugzilla. At 60 years old and having worked for Atari, Activision, Conner, Global Crossing, Frontier and the list goes on and on (boring) and writing code for over 35 years really has gotten old. But, this is the reason that I respect all of the hard work that the people have done with the SME Server software. OK iam old and perhaps somewhat jaded but if you know why SME8b4 is reporting back as a old vcersion of php please let me know.  Your friend Carl

I will wait for the 8 release and see what it offers. And, I will also send them so more money for all of their hard work. I hate to code - not enough Mountain Dew in the fridge to make me do it.

Hey, Please do me a big favor and send me some instructions as to how you perform the upgrade and what Joomla says in the installation screen. I performed the upgrade and it did not change a thing even after typing in the line explaining that the changes should take place in a ibay and NOT in the /opt directory. Thank You foir your help. p.s. I have 122 Joomla installs all over the country and I am having a bit of an issue with this PHP mess. Don't want to loose customers waiting for SME version 8 final version.  Carl

Yes please advise your "recipe" for configuring a sme7.4 server.
I assume you initially followthe php cgi howto here
http://wiki.contribs.org/PHP5

Please explain what you did to install the updated version from CentOS any any other specific steps.
Thanks

Slowly but very slowly I am working on an update to PHP 5.3.0. Theoretically it should be quite quick and painless but you never know with these things...

Anyway, you can follow along here:
