I have found the netgear ga311 gigabyte cards great, Best Buy has them for 34 dollars.
The netgear ga311 uses the realtek chips, which i like because realtek keeps their drivers upto date.

If you install a netgear ga311 card in a windows 2000 pro computer, go to the realtek web site and download their updated drivers and forget about the drivers and software that came with the card.

Because the cards are so cheap, get several in the event your cards becomes damaged in some way, and nic cards seem to be the first thing damaged when something happens to a computer, then all you have to do is plug another one in and you are on your way.

When i put one in  server that has an onboard card, all i have to do install the card in the computer and boot up the computer into it's bios setting then  disable the onboard card from the bios setup.
Once the sme server boots up, logon on with the user account "admin" and once inside the menu of server concole, go to choice number 2 "configure this server". Just hit enter for all the prompts given, then reboot if it does not do so by itself.   This is a piece of cake to do.
