Renaming domain
« on: July 19, 2009, 09:20:50 PM »
Hi

I hope someone can help with this query.A while ago I installed SME Server 7.4 into my company and it is working really well. When I originally set it up I set the domain up as my company.local as our company already had an internet presence (mail and website), which was hosted by an external company.(Mycompany.local is alias for my company's real domain name by the way!)

Now my directors want to bring it all in house and use our SME server to host both web and mail services. My problem is that because the domain is already called mycompany.local I don't think I can just rename it to our internet domain mycompany.co.uk can I? So how can I get round this or can I? I've read in the forums that you could login as admin and reconfigure the domain from there but I don't know what would happen to the user accounts and the user permissions on the primary bays etc so I'm not sure this is the right way.

Any help or advice greatly appreciated.

Hi,

your requirement is a default option with standard SME.

Please take a look at the manual on how to add hostnames and how to attach Ibays to that hostname so you can server you web content from that Ibays space.

That advice is correct and settings & data will be retained. The previous local domain will be removed so if you refer to that anywhere then those places will need to be changed.

You can use the Domains panel to seup your main domain as an additional virtual domain, but it does not seem to me to be the way you want to do it.

It always pays to make a full backup before making any major change.
Please search before asking, an answer may already exist.
