Server locks up every Saturday night
« on: July 20, 2009, 11:23:04 AM »
Hello all,
I've been lurking here for some time and have learned a lot from searching the forum so thanks to everyone so far.
I run a SME server 7.4 which is our main company server. It runs brilliantly and is so much better than the "other company" that we used to use!
I do have one problem which I cannot seem to find an answer for. Every Saturday night (Sunday morning) the server seems to lock up. I am unable to login to check webmail, nor am I able to login using the admin console. The symptom is that the machine is running exceptionally slowly and will not process the login. If I use Putty then it also freezes up and runs extremely slowly.
The only solution I have found is to use Putty and wait for up to ten minutes as it logs in and then force a reboot (reboot -f).
I have checked the logs overnight and the only thing that looks very different is I suddenly get loads of "getpeername failed. Error was Transport endpoint is not connected" errors.
I will try and attach some of my logfile if that helps but I'm not sure yet how to do that!
Does anyone have any ideas what may be doing this and can you help?
Many thanks in advance.

Mike

Well you could quite easily disable the weekly scan and see if your system does not slow down, and report back again, or report that to the bugtracker.
It sounds like you may be low on processor power or memory, what are your system specs ?

Freezing up and running slowly are not the same thing.
Slow running is a sign the system is very busy, and there are not enough resources to do everything that is happening.
Please search before asking, an answer may already exist.

Thanks for the reply, Mary.
I have disabled the weekly scan and I will see how that goes next week. Sorry for the confusion ref freezing/slow running. I have been unable to login so I have described that as freezing although it would be better described as slow running. I am running on a new HP server (HP ProLiant DL120 G5 - Rack - 1-way - 1 x Dual-Core Xeon 3065 / 2.33 GHz - RAM 1 GB - HDD 1 x 250 GB - DVD±RW - Gigabit Ethernet - 3Yr NBD) so I would not have thought that was a problem. (?!?)

I have submitted a bug report in case there is something more seriously wrong!

Thanks again for the suggestions

Mike

interesting my server has been doing this for a few months now. it bogs down so hard that i can not even surf the web or anything. I just upgraded to some newer hardware today to see if that helps.

now that i think about it mine does it pretty much randomly not just on Sunday night so far as i can tell.

Sure does sound like a network config issue.

Sounds like it's on a network with another DHCP server.

What diagnostics have you run???

Post ifconfig here.

Is there a router ahead of SME?

Server-Only or Gateway-Mode.

All relevant to the issue here.

Post ifconfig here.

Please don't.

Locking this thread in the hope to redirect the diagnosis to the one and only proper place, the bugtracker.
